Important figure of tibetan buddhism--hand gestures

The six main mudras or hand gestures of Buddha are:

Abhaya

Hand lifted to shoulder level with palm turned outward.

Bhumisparsha

Also known as 'earth-touching'. The right arm hangs over the right knee with the fingers touching a lotus throne. The left hand lies on the lap with palm upward. This gesture commemorates Sakyamuni's victory over temptation by demons.

Dharmachakra

Also known as 'turning the Wheel of Law'. Both hands are held in front of the chest with the thumb and index finger of both hands making circles. Recollects Sakyamuni's first sermon at Sarnath.

Dhyana

Both hands placed on lap with hands facing upwards. Hands often hold a begging bowl.

Varada

Arm is extended all the way down with palm facing outwards.

Vitarka

Tips of thumb and index finger form a circle.
