| Dazi County is located in the middle reaches of Lhasa River by the Sichuan-Tibet Highway. 25 kilometers apart from Lhasa, it covers an area of 1,370 square kilometers and has a population of 23,000. Dazi means tiger peak?in Tibetan. Dazi Dzong (the administrative unit of Tibet in former days equal to the present county) was set up in 1,354. With county seat located at Deqing Town, it is now subject to Lhasa City. Situated on the river valley zone in the middle reaches of Brahmaputra, the southeast and the northwest of the county are high mountain areas with an altitude of about 5,500 meters above sea level; the middle part of the county is river-valley flat lands. The terrain descends from northeast to southwest having an average elevation of about 4,500 meters above sea level. Featured in plateau temperate zone semiarid monsoon climate, it enjoys abundant sunlight; it is dry and windy in winter and spring and has excessive rains at night in summer. The county seat Deqing Town is less than half of a square kilometer and has a population of about one thousand. The post and communication services are somewhat convenient. Gandan, one of the six great monasteries of Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism, stands in the territory of Dazi County and famous around home and abroad. |
